Recently, a Joint Select Committee of Parliament, charged with the responsibility of overseeing Diaspora matters, heard submissions from a Diaspora Advisory Board calling for changes to the Constitution that would bar non-Jamaican Commonwealth citizens from being able to sit in Parliament.
 
They are also arguing for voting rights for Jamaicans overseas and for the government to look further at the sale of Air Jamaica with a view to keeping the asset in local hands.

Speaking with JIS News, Senator Robinson stressed that the submissions made to the Joint Select Committee would not be treated with scant regard.
 
These recommendations, he said, inform policy and help to form the core of bills, which eventually become laws of the land. “So, whatever is said, will be taken on very seriously and will be moved on with the greatest of expediency,” he noted.

The Diaspora Advisory Board represents Jamaicans in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.
 
Currently, a preparatory committee and several sub-committees are meeting and making plans for the upcoming Diaspora Conference to be held in June in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.
